Petes is the place to go when finding some hard to find produce or other cooking foods. It is pricey but the quality of the produce is great and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful.

Always an interesting shopping experience; I found fresh aloe here. I love the rosemary flatbread. The cheese section is phenomenal; a real variety of cheeses from around the world.

Cute store, free parking, awesome smoothies, good meat selection, so-so prepared foods, which are pricey, as are the fruit, veg, and imported products (i.e. chocolates). Shop is smaller than expected. Friendly staff. Good for some specialty items.

I shop regularly at this Petes to get snacks and drinks during my lunch break. Today, I decided I would get a “build your own” salad at the salad and sandwich bar. I’d done this before at the Halifax location with no issues. Before I begin, I eat and live a vegan lifestyle, so the salad I was looking to get was a vegan salad, which as I stated before, had been easily accomplished at the Halifax location. This was not the case at the Bedford location! I was met with a male employee at the salad bar who looked at me like I was wasting his time as soon as I stepped up to take my turn, I asked for my veggies and was given brown, probably past their date lettuce, tomatoes, etc.. I asked if they still had tofu for their salads (as they did at the Halifax location) and he looked at me like I was speaking another language and said “no??” And I politely explained that I’d gotten tofu before at another location so that’s why I wondered. Again, met with resistance and confusion, unsure of why. Once I was ready for salad dressing, I explained I was looking for a vegan salad dressing (I tried to search their menu online to know which dressings were vegan but didn’t have any luck). At this point, the male looked at me like I was crazy and said “”vegan?? Not sure” he proceeded to bring his female coworker over to ask her (who didn’t know either), they then got the ingredient book out and started reading through page by page. At this point, I noticed they had a balsamic vingtette and just told them I’d have that. The male coworker who had been making my salad, took the tongs he had been using and put them in the cheese dish, moving them all around (and covering them in cheese, which I don’t eat) and proceeded to turn around to make the salad. I figured he would switch tongs, considering my request for a vegan dressing, lack of cheese on my salad, and common curtesy. He did not switch the tongs, made the salad and boxed it up and handed it to the female. I paid for it and took it back to my seat where I opened it to reveal brown lettuce, hardly any noticeable dressing (very dry), and cheese mixed throughout. Sadly I chose not to consume the salad, and as the lunch rush had begun, I ended up throwing it all out. I will not be bringing my business to this Petes location again (including the grocery section), and will be letting my friends with dietary restrictions know about this incident. I may have expected their behavior at a place like McDonalds, but not a place like Petes. Such a shame.
